Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)

The Venus Flytrap is one of the most fascinating carnivorous plants in the world, famous for its jaw-like leaves that snap shut to trap unsuspecting insects. Native to the subtropical wetlands of North and South Carolina in the United States, this small but striking plant has evolved a unique way to supplement its nutrient intake from poor, acidic soils.

Each trap consists of two hinged lobes with sensitive trigger hairs on the inner surfaces. When an insect touches these hairs twice within seconds, the trap closes rapidly, trapping the prey inside. The plant then digests the insect over several days using enzymes.

Despite its fearsome reputation, the Venus Flytrap is a delicate plant that thrives best in high humidity, bright light, and nutrient-poor, wet soil. It makes a captivating addition to any indoor garden or terrarium and sparks curiosity in both kids and adults alike.

Light: Full sun or bright indoor light

Fun Fact: Each trap can only close about 3–5 times before it stops working!
